EIGHT-YEAR OLD GIRL LAUNCHES DOLL DRIVE
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — When she was just five years old, Zoe Terry started her own nonprofit called Zoe’s Dolls, where beginning on her birthday, Oct, 19th and continuing until Dec. 20th, she asks family, friends and the community to donate new dolls of color. The dolls are then distributed to little girls in need across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, Atlanta, GA, Dallas, TX, Haiti and Zambia, Africa, during the holiday season.
Four years later Terry’s mission is still going strong. This year Terry wanted to kick off doll season in a big way. During the Oct. 25th event, being sponsored by What Next Global and The City of Miami Gardens Vice Mayor Felicia Robinson, Terry will unveil the Living Doll Experience (LDE). LDE will also feature nine community girls who will be transformed into “living dolls” and cased in life size doll boxes.
The show will include an eclectic burst of fashion, music and dance to bring the image of the powerful, beautiful and undeniable black girl to life.
“It’s so important for little girls like me to know that we are beautiful and that we are powerful,” said Terry. “I’m so excited to be having this event, it’s going to be so awesome.”
The event, which will be hosted, by 103.5 The Beat and Ashli “The Goldie Show” Cleary, will feature live music by young girl DJs from Girls Make Beats, free food, entertainment, vendors offering free items and social service agencies.
During the event, Terry will unveil the Girlpreneur Program, a pilot program that kicks off in January that will work with 15 girls between the ages of 8-12 who have interest in owning their own business. Girlpreneur will work with the girls for six months, and using a kid-based business curriculum, will provide the girls the foundation for starting their own business.
Since starting Zoe’s Dolls, Terry has donated over 1,500 dolls to little girls in need. What Next Global, a non-profit organization established to support youth development, empowerment and entrepreneurship, partnered with Terry to make her dream a reality.
